Conflicting stories


It’s you last chance to see the Don McCullin retrospective exhibition ‘Shaped By War’ as this weekend it ends its’ run at Salford’s Imperial War Museum North. It now moves on to the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath from 11 September, and then in the autumn of 2011, to London’s Imperial War Museum.

Seeing these photographs again, reminds us that the Vietnam War in particular, is defined through photographs of McCullin, Tim Page and others. Since then, perhaps because of the power of such photographs, the portrayal of war has become much more controlled and few of the images that followed have had the effect of McCullin’s.

Does this matter? Can photographs change public opinion? And if they can, does this affect the conduct of wars? More…
