My exhibition about war memorialisation, postponed since November because of the coronavirus lockdowns has had several false dawns, but is finally opening on:
Wednesday 14 April and running until (VE Day) Saturday 8 May 2021. As there are still restrictions in place, we are not going to have an opening event, but instead I'll be at the gallery every Saturday from 2 to 4pm during its run – You can have a personal guided tour – or just tell me to bugger off and read the captions yourself. Either way it would be great to see you.
As Air Gallery is a commercial gallery it is allowed to open before public galleries, but to help with social distancing they may have to limit the number of people in at any one time and you will need to wear a face covering.
Please note the opening times, as the venue is not open all week:
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 11am to 6pm and Saturday 12 to 5pm The exhibition is FREE.
Getting there It is easy to get to by public transport being about a 5 or 10 minute walk from Altrincham Interchange, where there are bus, Metrolink and rail services. There is a GM Cycle Hub at the station if you are a member. If you come out of the Interchange turn right, Grosvenor Road is the first on the right. Air Gallery is a converted industrial building (with an interesting history) half way down, again on the right. Right?
There is on street pay and display parking, please note that Grosvenor Road is no entry from Stamford New Road (where the Interchange is).
There are public pay and an accessible Radar Key toilets at the Interchange and accessible toilets at the venue. Access to the gallery is step free, there will be someone at the front desk who can help.
The full address is: Air Gallery, 30 Grosvenor Road, Altrincham, WA14 1LD.
As the exhibition has been postponed twice, a lot of the publicity and interest we got going for it has been lost in the fog of pandemic – so please share details of the exhibition on social media as widely as you can.
Books There are two books to go with the exhibition – 'War Work', which is a catalogue of the exhibits and 'War Games', essays and photographs about war memorialisation (and a lot funnier than it sounds). You can download them as pdfs for free here or buy them here, or buy them at the gallery with £1 off.
