My own small cabinet of curiosities recently received a gracious gift from a Miss S. Gwyer of Rugby. This being a series of matchboxes from Estonia, each of which bore a portrait of some significant political personage. These will be displayed alongside my sugar sachets featuring revolutionary leaders such as Che Guevara.
As was ever the case, it’s not the quality of illustrations that are of interest, but rather who the creators have chosen to feature. Here the selection of Tsar Nicholas, Chairman Mao and Margaret Thatcher tell us much about the Baltic frame of mind, whilst the inclusion of Obama leads one to speculate if, like Gorbachev and our dear old Tony Blair, Mr President may find himself more honoured abroad than in his own land.
